Between the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the trial of Saddam Hussein, the subject of war and peace has been all too relevant recently. Now is the time to ponder the perspectives of the Jewish tradition regarding this topic. Swords and Plowshares, by Rabbi Edwin Goldberg, offers comprehensive analysis of Jewish texts?ˆ”biblical, rabbinic, and medieval?ˆ”that deal with the subject of war and peace. Each text is presented in Hebrew and in English, followed by study questions and commentary. Through such guided study, the reader will appreciate the nuances in the Jewish tradition regarding both times of war and times of peace. Examples from modern history are also provided to illuminate the textual subjects.

Heads and Tales: Stories of the Sages to Enlighten Our Minds Heads and Tales: Stories of the Sages to Enlighten Our Minds

Rabbi Edwin Goldberg's new book Heads and Tales: Stories from the Sages to Enlighten our Minds brings age-old tales to life once more. Designed as an introduction to the art of reading rabbinic literature, Heads and Tales opens the door to the creative genius of the rabbis of long ago.

Using this carefully selected collection of stories, Heads and Tales will help instill a love of Jewish stories, while also helping students gain the skills needed to be critical readers of these traditional stories. In addition, these stories demonstrate that the issues that concerned our ancestors in past generations are similar or are the same as those that concern us today. The tales found in the book, while they may have been written in years gone by, remain most relevant.

Galilee Diary: Reflections on Daily Life in Israel

For most American Jews, Israel is only seen through the lens of the political debate, the impressions of the news report, or the windows of a tour bus. Begun as a weekly online essay in response to the Second Intifada in 2000, Galilee Diary goes beyond the headlines to provide an insider’s view of the rich and complex reality that is Israel. First time readers and longtime fans of the series will enjoy this multidimensional look at Israel, which includes revised and updated highlights from the popular online series.

CHAI Israel Strand Curriculum Core

The teaching of Israel has become a high priority for our congregational school system in recent years. There is a documented decline in commitment to Israel among young Jews. The Reform Movement is confronting this challenge in a number of ways. The CHAI Israel Strand Curriculum is a tool to be employed in our classroom to nurture our students' connection to Israel: the land, the people, and the culture. This strand is composed of nineteen lessons, two or three lessons for each CHAI level 1-7, and can be used on its own or complement the rest of your CHAI curriculum. Each of the seven levels focuses on one aspect of Israel and our connection to it as North American progressive Jews. As with each CHAI Curriculum Core, the Israel Strand Curriculum Core includes all the necessary teaching material for each lesson. The full-color workbooks are filled with photographs, maps, and student activities.
