AMID THE JASMINE is filled with multi-cultural spirit conveyed through an eclectic mix of 11 songs of love and its angst in Ladino, Spanish, Arabic, English, and Hebrew from the Sephardic and Middle Eastern traditions, as well as original songs by Gerard Edery. The worldly nature of this performance goes much deeper than language. Edery's warm and nuanced vocals are enhanced by The Gerard Edery Ensemble that provides somber or driving accompaniment one minute and a playful cushion of improvisations the next, on percussion, bass, violin, mandolin, and oud. The record's brilliant facets shine in a different light when the rhythm section, at times, brings a rock feel to a world beat, while tying everything together is the omnipresent flamenco guitar. Edery masterfully fills out the ensemble with beautiful arpeggios and embellishments and brings the songs to life. These deeply textured compositions feature the exotic, the poignant and the passionate.

A LA UNA: IN THE BEGINNING - CD

Preserving traditional Sephardic music and culture and fusing it with contemporary Western influences like rock, funk, jazz, and blues, is a personal mission for spirited Sarah Aroeste. Ladino, the language of her family, gracefully emerges through the voice and heart of this vibrant singer, with the accompaniment of world class band members Yoel Ben-Simhon, Hicham Chami, Alan Cohen, Emannuel Mann, Carlos Revollar, Bridget Robbins, Vin Scialla, and Yousif Sheronick. Traditional Ladino songs from across the Mediterranean  come alive in this rhythmic feast. The exotic sounds of the oud, qanun, nay, and darbuka meld with piano, electric and classical guitar, bass, drums and percussion, creating a tantalizing blend of old and new.
