Drawing on a rich tradition of musical experiences, they present lively and captivating performances, keynote presentations, and teacher workshops for family audiences, in-service staff training sessions, and educational conferences across the country.
Ellen began her formal piano studies at the age of five, studied flute through elementary and high school, and learned to play acoustic guitar while a student in college. After graduating from Boston University with a Bachelor of Music, she taught elementary vocal music, grades K - 6 for four years. Pursuing further graduate music education studies under the tutelage of renowned Orff teacher Joseph Wuytack, she brings a strong Orff component into her teaching and performing. She earned her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education at Arcadia University.
Peter began taking accordion lessons as a young child, eventually learning to play acoustic and bass guitar in high school. His varied musical career has included playing in country, blues, jazz, and rock & roll musical groups. Possessing the skill and flexibility to play in numerous musical styles has given him a strong foundation and has been a great source of inspiration for his teaching and playing. Peter is a graduate of Worcester State College, with a Bachelor's degree in Health Education.
They met in 1994 and began performing together immediately, loving their work and each other, eventually marrying in 1996. They have 5 adult children between them, their true pride and joy!
Peter and Ellen have numerous recordings to their credit. Their first recording of Jewish music, Sing Shalom: Songs for the Jewish Holidays (1997) is a collection of 14 original, memorable, and fun songs that teach the basic concepts of the Jewish holidays. English lyrics with some Hebrew phrases are meant to inspire prayer, study, and most importantly, family singing! Sing Shalom is a "Parent's Choice Recommended" CD, and won a Children's Music Web Award as a "Classic CD for Young Children."
Their second Jewish recording, Bring the Sabbath Home (2003) features 16 fun, engaging, contemplative, and educational songs designed to add a new dimension to the spirituality of Jewish homes, schools, and worship experiences. Songs such as "Ten Plagues In Egypt Land," "Standing At The Sea" and "Are You Listening, God?" have become immensely popular and widely used in a variety of settings.
Little Taste of Torah is Peter and Ellen's most recent recording (2009). Published by Sounds Write Productions and produced and mixed by Scott Leader, Little Taste of Torah is Peter & Ellen at an entirely new level: this is one big, hot serving of Jewish kid's music at the cutting edge. Fourteen new, original songs reflect the Allard's growing maturity and sophistication as Jewish educators and musicians, while remaining true their roots as writers of Jewish children's music that is easy to sing, high energy, and really FUN! The sparkling, state-of-the-art digital production makes these songs come alive with a vibrant energy that, if you have seen Peter and Ellen perform live, you will recognize as uniquely theirs. Several of these tunes - "Shofar Blast," "Shake, Shake, Shake," and "Baby Moses in a Basket" to name just a few - became instant classics after being introduced at Hava Nashira, and are now widely taught and sung in Jewish schools across North America.
Peter and Ellen have gained a reputation as experts in the field of Jewish music for young children. Working with the Early Childhood Education Department of the Union for Reform Judaism and URJ Press , they developed Peter and Ellen Allard Present Songs for a Jewish Head Start, a unique collection of 19 songs adapted for use in Jewish early childhood education. The songs help children learn the principles of fairness, decency, respect, and caring, teach age-appropriate Jewish values, and foster Jewish identity.
The Allards also have a unique expertise in creating worship experiences for young children and their families. They are significant contributors to The Tot Shabbat Handbook: A Practical Guide for Engaging Young Families in Congregational Life. This long-awaited new resource presents ideas and real-world tips from experts in the field about the who, what, where, when, and why of worship experiences for young families. Included is a CD of great music for Tot Shabbat, which features 6 songs by the Allards.

My Jewish World: An Early Childhood Music Curriculum (Book/CD set)
Music can be a wonderfully effective teaching tool for preschool aged children. My Jewish World guides teachers through the process of introducing and utilizing song in the classroom to teach Jewish values.
In her comprehensive and easy to follow book, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh includes twenty-six songs, religious and secular, that will help to facilitate an environment of fun and learning. Each song addresses important Jewish concepts and many use Hebrew words and prayers. Judy provides comments, activities, and creative ideas, specific for each song, which can be used in the classroom to learn about being Jewish every day. The importance of saying the Sh'ma each morning, learning the Hebrew words for colors, understanding body parts, and the value of cooperation are only some of the Jewish concepts touched on in the book.
In addition, Judy Ginsburgh includes a list of suggested books for many of the topics. These books help to reinforce and expand the lessons laid out in the curriculum.
With a helpful glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms and the companion music CD, My Jewish World is a wonderful guide to making music significant in the Jewish classroom.
